AI Computing Power Could Become a Tradeable Commodity Like Oil
Silicon Data and a number of other market participants are exploring the concept of turning AI computing resources into a standardized exchange-traded commodity that can be bought and sold through futures contracts. According to Silicon Data's Carmen Li, AI compute futures could eventually surpass some of the world's largest existing commodity markets in terms of volume. The idea itself reflects a growing recognition that access to computing power is becoming a strategic resource that determines corporate competitiveness in the digital age. For investors, the emergence of such a market would mean the ability to hedge risks related to AI infrastructure costs or make directional bets on rising consumption. While the concept is still at an early stage, interest from major financial institutions continues to grow.
