U.S. Federal Debt Interest Payments Hit $857 Billion in Nine Months
The U.S. federal budget has recorded a striking figure: in under a full fiscal year, the country spent $857 billion solely on servicing its national debt — more than the entire defense budget. Breaking it down per American household amounts to roughly $737 per month, a number that vividly illustrates the scale of the problem. Years of elevated interest rates combined with tens of trillions in accumulated debt have made borrowing costs one of the largest budget expenditure items. This limits the government's capacity for fiscal stimulus and increases risks for Treasury bond holders. Analysts warn that without structural reforms, the debt burden will keep growing, putting pressure on U.S. Treasury yields and the dollar.
